American Academy of Periodontology: Who We Are
The AAP is an association of periodontists—dental professionals specializing in the treatment of gum diseases and in the placement of dental implants.
Our Membership
The Academy's current membership includes more than than 8,000 periodontists and general dentists from all
50 states as well as around the world.
Our Purpose
The Academy's purpose is to advance the periodontal and general health of the public and promote excellence in the practice of periodontics. Periodontics is one of nine dental specialties recognized by the American Dental Association.
Our Leadership
The Academy is governed by a Board of Trustees comprised of five officers and district trustees from seven geographical districts and the federal services. The officers are elected by the membership.
Our History
The AAP was founded in 1914 with 18 charter members under the name American Academy of Oral Prophylaxis and Periodontology.

Membership Applications
Applications are accepted throughout the year for four
membership categories. Annual dues are for the calendar year
January 1 to
December 31. Payment of the application fee and annual dues must accompany the application. Applications received on or after
October 31 are processed with a
January 1 join date.
