AAP Honors Award Recipients during 94th Annual Meeting in Seattle
Academy Awards are given each year for outstanding contributions to the AAP and the profession of periodontics.
CHICAGO—September 8, 2008—The American Academy of Periodontology (AAP) awarded excellence in the field of periodontology amongst its members at the opening ceremony of the 94th Annual Meeting, held September 6, 2008, in Seattle, Washington. The awards were presented by Immediate Past President Dr. Susan Karabin and 2009 President, Dr. David Cochran.
“I am proud to honor my colleagues in their achievements and praise them for their time and efforts throughout the years,” said Dr. Cochran. “This year’s award winners are indicative of the successes we have had in innovation, research, and dedication in the field of periodontics.”
Individual Awards
The Gold Medal Award, sponsored by Sunstar Suisse, SA, recognizes Dr. Ray Williams for his outstanding contributions to the field of periodontics. A member of the AAP since 1970, Dr. Williams has contributed through service to the Academy, research, and the education of postdoctoral students. In addition to his position as Distinguished Professor at the University of North Carolina School of Dentistry where he is also Chair of the department of periodontology, Dr. Williams has served as a member of the Journal of Periodontology advisory panel and on the AAP’s Continuing Education Oversight Committee, and as a past member of the Board of Trustees.
The Master Clinician Award, sponsored by Hu-Friedy Mfg. Co., recognizes Dr. William Becker for the consistent clinical excellence he has demonstrated and practiced in the field of periodontics. The Master Clinician Award was established in 1987 through the efforts of Dr. Becker himself. He is well known for his landmark research and development of clinical techniques and has lectured all over the world. He is co-editor of Clinical Implant Dentistry and is in full-time private practice in Tucson, Arizona. Dr. Becker is a Past President of the AAP, has served on numerous AAP committees, and has previously received the Presidential Award, Clinical Research Award and a Special Citation among other recognitions.
The Presidential Award, underwritten by Proctor & Gamble Professional Oral Health, recognizes Dr. Milton Palat for his distinguished service to the AAP over several decades. A member for nearly 40 years, Dr. Palat has proven his dedication as the Academy’s parliamentarian, both for the Board of Trustees and for the General Assembly. In addition, Dr. Palat has dedicated his time to the clinical aspects of periodontal care, and on risk management and legal issues in various aspects of patient care. Dr. Palat is Associate Professor of Periodontics and Implant Dentistry and Senior Advisor to the Office of Clinical Affairs-Case Review at New York University's College of Dentistry.
The Outstanding Periodontal Educator Award, sponsored by GlaxoSmithKline, recognizes Dr. William W. Hallmon for his distinguished contributions as a teacher and mentor. Dr. Hallmon is Regents Professor and Chair of the Department of Periodontics at Baylor College of Dentistry - Texas A&M Health Science Center in Dallas. In addition to serving on numerous scientific and education committees and task forces for the AAP, Dr. Hallmon has previously received a Fellowship award from the Academy. He serves on the AAP Foundation committee for the Chasens Fellowship.
This year’s Humanitarian Award honors Dr. Irvin B. Silverstein for the selfless donation of his time and expertise to benefit the underserved. Dr. Silverstein has been a member of the Academy for over 25 years and is being honored for his work with the University of California at San Diego (UCSD) Free Dental Clinic, which he both organized and currently directs. The clinic provides free services to the underserved population in San Diego, and is staffed by 60 volunteer dentists and over 150 pre-dental students, who function as assistants. Dr. Silverstein serves as the Director/Advisor of UCSD Student-Run Free Dental Clinic Project and Pre-Dental Society and also maintains a periodontal practice in La Mesa, California.
The Fellowship Award, sponsored by Procter & Gamble Professional Oral Health, honors Dr. Frank A. Lasley, III, for his distinguished service to the Academy. Dr Lasley has been an Academy member for almost 40 years, and has served on the Board of Trustees as well as many AAP committees and task forces. He also has spoken at many of the Academy’s Annual Meeting programs. Dr. Lasley is in private practice in Burlington, Massachusetts.
The Academy is pleased to present an Honorary Membership to Mr. Larry Farrell for his outstanding contributions to the field of periodontology. As a corporate sponsor and exhibitor at annual meetings, a sponsor for workshops and as an underwriter of the Gold Medal Award, Mr. Farrell has made numerous contributions to the Academy. In addition, Mr. Farrell has served as a member of the Board of Directors of the AAP Foundation. Mr. Farrell is currently vice president of corporate professional relations for Sunstar Butler.
Research and Literature Awards
The Clinical Research Award is sponsored by Quintessence Publishing Company and honors an outstanding published scientific manuscript having direct clinical relevance and application to the practice of periodontics. Authors Steven Offenbacher, DDS, PhD, MMSc; Silvana P. Barros, DDS, PhD; Kevin L. Moss; Robert E. Singer, PhD; Ray C. Williams, DMD; and James D. Beck, DDS, PhD, are honored for their paper Periodontal Disease at the Biofilm-Gingival Interface, published in the October 2007 issue of the Journal of Periodontology.
The R. Earl Robinson Regeneration Award is sponsored by the American Academy of Periodontology Foundation and honors the most outstanding published scientific article on periodontal regeneration in the basic or clinical sciences. Authors Morikuni Tobita, DDS; Hiroshi Mizuno, MD, DMSc; Rei Ogawa, MD, PhD; and A. Çagri Uysal, MD, are honored for their paper “Periodontal Tissue Regeneration with Adipose-derived Stem Cells”, published in the December 2007 issue of Tissue Engineering.
The William J. Gies Award is sponsored by American Dental Education Association (ADEA) and presented annually for outstanding contributions to literature in the field of periodontology. The award is provided by the William J. Gies Foundation for the Advancement of Dentistry. This year’s recipient is Dr. Thomas Van Dyke in recognition of his contributions to periodontal science over the past 35 years. Dr. Van Dyke is currently Professor and Program Director of the Postdoctoral Periodontology Program, and Director of the Clinical Research Center at Boston University.
Special Citations
Special Citations, sponsored by Johnson & Johnson Healthcare Products, are presented to Journal of Periodontology editor Dr. Kenneth Kornman, as well as Drs. Thomas Van Dyke and Ray Williams for their work in planning the Academy’s extremely successful Workshop on Inflammation, held in January 2008.
Also receiving a Special Citation is Dr. Milton Palat, for his service as Academy Parliamentarian for nearly 10 years. Dr. Palat has recently been appointed for an additional three years of service in this capacity.
