Hawaii Periodontist Installed as AAP President

Michael P. Rethman retired from the U.S. Army Dental Corps in 2001 after 26 years as a dentist in the U.S. Army.

Michael RethmanCHICAGO – September 24, 2003 – The American Academy of Periodontology (AAP) installed Dr. Michael P. Rethman, D.D.S., M.S., as president today during its 89th Annual Meeting in San Francisco. Rethman resides in the Honolulu area.

Rethman has been a member of the AAP since 1981 and has served in various capacities, including as a member of the Board of Trustees; chair of the Finance Committee; chair of the Committee on Constitution and Bylaws; member of Task Force on Dental Hygiene Education; member of Task Force to Develop an Outcomes Assessment Program; member of Organizing Committee for a Workshop on Emerging Science in Clinical Periodontics and developer of three study kits based on recent World Workshop in Periodontics findings.

“I am looking forward to a successful year as president and hope to continue to bring the AAP closer to its 2020 vision.” said Dr. Rethman.

After 26 years as a dentist in the U.S. Army, Rethman retired from the US Army Dental Corps in 2001. During his Army career, he worked as a clinician, scientist, research institute director and dental school faculty member.

In addition, he is an active member of the American Dental Association, the International and American Association for Dental Research, the American College of Dentists, and served on the National Advisory Dental and Craniofacial Research Council from 1996 - 2000. Recently he served as an expert panel member for the American Dental Association's “Future of Dentistry” report.

A diplomate of the American Board of Periodontology, Rethman received his dental degree from Ohio State University and his certificate of periodontics from the U.S. Army Institute of Dental Research in Washington D.C. in 1974 and 1983 respectively.
