IN-SERVICE EXAMINATION

This examination provides a tool for evaluating the effectiveness of programs and prepares students for the written examination for Diplomate certification.

2012 Examination Dates

The In-Service Exam will be administered by U.S. postdoctoral periodontal programs according to the schedule below.

February 10, 2012An exam application and a fee of $110 must be submitted to the AAP Office for each student taking the exam.
March 5-9, 2012Examination administered by programs. Please check with your postdoctoral program director to determine the exact day and time that the exam will be administered at your institution.

If you are submitting the exam application yourself, do one of the following by February 10:

Institutions Administering the Examination

All programs must submit to the AAP either the online Program Information Form or the printable Program Information FormCan't open this? Download Acrobat Reader by February 10, whether or not they are sending in exam applications for students.

If your institution is sending student applications to the AAP by February 10, you must include a signed copy of the printable application and confidentiality agreement for each studentCan't open this? Download Acrobat Reader taking the exam, along with full payment by check or credit card.

In-Service Examination Refund Policy

For a full refund, the American Academy of Periodontology must receive a letter by February 3, 2012, from the student’s postdoctoral director on school letterhead verifying that the student is unable to take the In-Service Exam.

From February 4-25, 2012, a student or school may receive a 50 percent refund. The Academy must receive a letter by February 25, 2012, from the student's postdoctoral director on school letterhead verifying that the student is unable to take the In-Service Exam. After February 25, 2012, no refunds will be distributed.

The Exam is comprised of 375 questions based on current and classic literature. Recommended study material includes current literature, past In-Service Examinations and other documents listed in the table below.
