Plan for Predoctoral Perio Internship

Sophomore and junior students with an interest in periodontics can experience a 1-2 week rotation in the department.

Juniors and Seniors – Common Session

An Introduction to Clinical Periodontics

  1. An orientation to discuss clinical policies and the agenda for their internship (1 hour, maybe longer)
  2. An overview of the different procedures that periodontists perform
  3. A chance to meet with the other full-time faculty (1/2 day)

Total program for Juniors (5 days)

  1. Assisting in the graduate periodontics clinic (primarily on the surgery side, excluding implants) (2 days)
  2. Treatment planning seminars—students review two cases with findings that the patient presented with including x-rays and faculty members go through the treatment planning process with the students. (1/2 day)
  3. Meeting with periodontics faculty to discuss research ideas and explore the possibility of submitting a proposal to the IADR for a summer research funding (1/2 day)
  4. Private practice experience—students spend a day at a private office to experience the functioning of a private periodontal practice (1 day)
  5. Wrap up session—students meet with all the full-time faculty for pizza and drinks. Opportunities to discuss applying for graduate programs in periodontics and to evaluate usefulness of the week and discuss ways of improving this internship. (1/2 day)

Total Program for Seniors (5 days)

  1. Assisting in the graduate periodontics clinic (primarily on the surgery side, excluding implants) (2 days)
  2. Predoctoral Surgery under faculty supervision (1/2 day)
  3. Private practice experience—students spend a day at a private office to experience the functioning of a private periodontal practice. (1 day)
  4. Meeting with faculty to discuss research ideas and other considerations regarding applying for graduate programs(1/2 day)
  5. Wrap up session—students meet with all the full-time faculty for pizza and drinks. Opportunities to discuss applying for graduate programs in periodontics and to evaluate usefulness of the week and discuss ways of improving this internship. (1/2 day)

In addition, the senior students are encouraged to sign up for the elective Advanced Periodontics Seminar. This consists of 14 lectures and the advanced lab for a total of 17 credit hours.
