Abram and Sylvia Chasens Teaching and Research Fellowships

Elibility requirements and submission guidelines for Chasens Fellowships awarded through the AAP Foundation.

What is awarded?

Created to encourage periodontal students to enter teaching, two $15,000 fellowships are awarded annually. The award is not to be used to replace support that would have normally been provided by the recipient's institution. The award should be considered a supplement to any salary, stipend or research support.

Who is eligible?

Periodontal postgraduate students in their third year of a non-military accredited periodontal post-doctoral training program in the United States, and who intend to pursue a career in periodontal teaching and research in the United States.

What are the qualifications?

A strong interest in periodontal education is the primary qualification. In addition, the selected candidates must demonstrate excellent character, integrity, a record of academic and personal achievements, and an aptitude for teaching and research.

Application for Chasens Fellowship

All application materials must be received by April 15. Please complete form online, save, and e-mail it as an attachment and then mail the following supporting documentation to the AAP Foundation:

Completed application form
Transcript of grades from dental school and postgraduate work
Curriculum vitae
750-word personal statement that addresses special qualities the applicant will bring to education, the applicant's philosophy of education, research interests, extracurricular and community activities, financial need, and career plans
Three letters of recommendation: one from their program director, one from another periodontal professional, and a personal letter of reference

What is the selection process?

The selection committee is made up of three periodontists who have an interest in periodontal education. Members of the committee are appointed by the Foundation president. The fellowship recipients are announced by June 1.
