CHICAGO—September 6, 2007—The American Academy of Periodontology Foundation recently announced that Biomet 3i is renewing its $300,000 commitment to support the Foundation’s Richard J. Lazzara Fellowship in Advanced Implant Surgery. The Biomet 3i commitment enables the Foundation to award a $50,000, 12-month Fellowship to a qualified applicant in their third year of periodontal postdoctoral training.

“We are most appreciative of Biomet 3i’s generous support of this important aspect of periodontal education and practice. Since the Foundation’s first Biomet 3i Fellowship was awarded in 2004, every one of our Lazzara Fellows has exerted a positive impact on the advancement of implant surgery,” says AAP Foundation President Paul Levi, Jr., D.M.D.

The AAP Foundation Lazzara Fellowship was created to provide educational and clinical experiences that reflect the most current techniques in implant dentistry. The hosting institution must provide the Fellow with clinical learning experiences in the surgical management of advanced implant cases, including implant site development and oral plastic surgery procedures aimed at restoration, clinical research leading to the development of an implant-related research paper suitable for publication, and teaching experiences. The Fellowship is named in honor of Richard J. Lazzara, D.M.D., a co-founder of BIOMET 3i and an innovator in implantology. The award includes a stipend for the Fellow as well as funds to offset the hosting institution’s overhead and administrative costs.

“Biomet 3i’s continued support of the AAP Foundation, through the renewal of the Richard J. Lazzara Fellowship in Advanced Implant Surgery, is an opportunity for us to contribute to the Foundation’s sustained efforts in the development of periodontal leaders through formal education and peer mentoring. The AAP Foundation continues to select Lazzara Fellows who are of the highest caliber. All have gone on to successful careers that include authoring on topics related to implant dentistry and/or positions in academia. We are honored to be a supporter of the specialty,” says Steven Schiess, president of Biomet 3i.
