A recent $50,000 pledge from Straumann pushed the American Academy of Periodontology Foundation Gerald M. Bowers Endowment Fund for the American Board of Periodontology over the $1 million mark.

CHICAGO – October 28, 2002 – The fund, which will help the ABP to maintain financial stability and incorporate testing technology that makes exam opportunities more accessible, was launched just last year with a goal of $1.5 million in five years.

The donation was made at the Foundation Gala in New Orleans in September.

William J. (Bill) Ryan, president and CEO of Straumann, known for the ITI® Dental Implant System, characterized the donation as an investment in the future. “We are strong believers in the value of periodontology in the total dental care picture. Our pledge to the Bowers Fund is our expression of that belief.” The pledge is an increase in an earlier $50,000 pledge, bringing the company's total commitment to $100,000.

“Our responsibility to our specialty is to ensure that it maintains its position as the benchmark of dental care excellence,” says the Foundation's recently elected president, Donald S. Clem, III, DDS. “Straumann's most recent pledge helps us to do this by supporting this very critical campaign, the Bowers Fund.”

The Gerald M. Bowers Endowment Fund for the ABP is a 5-year, $1.5 million campaign launched in October 2001. Interest from the Fund will be used to extend board certification opportunities and incorporate online technologies. The Fund currently stands at just over $1 million.
