CHICAGO, July 11, 2005 – The American Academy of Periodontology Foundation recently awarded two Abram and Sylvia Chasens Teaching and Research Fellowships. The Fellowships are $15,000 each, and two are awarded annually to uniquely talented individuals who are in their third year of an accredited post-doctoral training program in the US and intend to pursue full-time periodontal teaching and research.

This year’s recipients of the Fellowships are Dr. Yiorgos A. Bobetsis and Dr. Dana Wolf. At the time of his nomination, Dr. Bobetsis was completing his Periodontology Certificate and Oral Biology PhD training at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill School of Dentistry, Department of Periodontology, where he will graduate in December 2005. Dr. Wolf was in her third year of the periodontal program at Columbia University School of Dental and Oral Surgery at the time of her nomination. She will join the Division of Periodontics as a junior faculty member in July.

The Chasens Fellowship was created by Dr. and Mrs. Chasens out of concern about the shortage of dental educators. Dr. Chasens taught for more than 30 years, which included a fulltime post from 1957 to 1971 at Fairleigh Dickinson University, where he started the department of periodontics and oral medicine.
