CHICAGO—August 6, 2008—The American Academy of Periodontology (AAP) Foundation recently awarded Ronan Allen, B.Dent.Sc., a $15,000 AAP Foundation Education Fellowship Funded by OMNI Preventive Care. The award was made based on Dr. Allen’s research proposal for a study examining the relationship between periodontal infection, obesity and diabetic status in children ages 9 to 11. “Hopefully, this will enable us to identify risk factors that will be evaluated in larger prospective clinical trials,” says Dr. Allen. Ultimately, the work could lead to earlier intervention with preventive measures that may improve oral and overall systemic health.

Dr. Allen completed his dental training at Trinity College School of Dental Science in Dublin, Ireland, and is studying for his Clinical Certificate and M.S. in Periodontology at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Following his graduation from the UNC program, Dr. Ronan plans to combine clinical practice, teaching and research.

The AAPF Education Fellowship Funded by OMNI Preventive Care, a 3M ESPE Company, is intended to encourage academic periodontology as a career choice. It also draws attention to research in prevention of periodontitis.

“OMNI Preventive Care, a 3M ESPE Company, has a long history of partnering with great organizations like the AAP Foundation to help develop leaders of tomorrow, which further strengthens the dental profession,” said OMNI’s Jennifer Spresser.

Applicants for the award must be students in their first or second year of a U.S. periodontal postdoctoral program, and their application packet must include a proposal for a research project.

More information about the award is available on the AAP website at www.perio.org/foundation/OMNI.htm.
