CHICAGO, February 28, 2006—The American Academy of Periodontology (AAP) Foundation recently announced that it is the recipient of one half of a $1 million planned gift commitment made by Robert T. Ferris, DDS, PhD. When realized, the gift will be split evenly between the AAP Foundation and the Florida Dental Health Foundation (FDHF). The AAP Foundation will use the gift to support programs focusing on the enhancement of periodontal education.
Both the AAP Foundation and the FDHF are partners in the National Campaign for Dental Education, a collaborative national campaign coordinated by the ADA Foundation and intended to secure the future of dental education. “By giving generously to support periodontal education, we demonstrate leadership to the rest of the dental community. We show that we have confidence in the future of our specialty” says Dr. Ferris.
"Dr. Ferris's gift is not only generous, it is an inspiration. The Foundation is cognizant of the importance of continuing support for periodontal education, and we hope that Dr. Ferris's gift moves others to consider the future educational needs of the specialty in their charitable giving," says Edward P. Allen, DDS, PhD, president of the AAP Foundation.
Dr. Ferris serves on the AAP Foundation Board and also serves on the Foundation’s AAP Education Scholarship/Teaching Fellowship Selection Committee. He was instrumental in founding the AAP Foundation. Dr. Ferris was president of the American Academy of Periodontology in 1997, where he also has been active in a number of endeavors supporting the organization and the specialty.
