The Foundation provided a grant that funded four periodontal Fellows selected by ADEA/AAL. |
CHAPEL HILL, NC—July 27, 2009—The American Academy of Periodontology Foundation (AAPF) made a grant to the American Dental Education Association (ADEA) and the Academy for Academic Leadership (AAL) intensive faculty-development program, the Institute for Teaching and Learning (ITL). The grant was used to provide scholarships to four periodontists selected by ADEA/AAL. The ADEA/AAL ITL is an intensive faculty-development program conducted in collaboration with the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (UNC) School of Dentistry. The program’s goal is to help recruit and retain dental faculty by preparing participants to become more effective teachers and develop skills that will facilitate confidence, job satisfaction, and professional growth in the academic environment.
“ADEA welcomes the participants of the 2009 ADEA/AAL ITL,” said ADEA President Ronald J. Hunt, D.D.S. “This program is important to the Association’s efforts to develop future dental school faculty, and we commend these individuals and their institutions for their commitment to dental education.”
The two-phase program at UNC will enable 38 ADEA/AAL ITL Scholars to attain a higher level of excellence in evidence-based clinical and didactic modalities of dental education. The Scholars will receive hands-on experience with key teacher tasks such as evaluating student competence, presenting lectures, planning courses, constructing tests, facilitating small-group learning, working with difficult students, guiding students with questions, and providing feedback. Scholars also will explore cognitive theories, learn strategies to work with challenging students, review research on educational best practices and critical thinking, study learning styles, analyze the characteristics of today’s Millennials and complete teaching self-assessments. The program will conclude with extensive lessons on leading effective meetings and chairing academic committees and offer a focused examination of Scholars’ career development plans.
“A total of 135 faculty and those transitioning from private practice to academic careers have participated in the ADEA/AAL ITL,” said N. Karl Haden, Ph.D., AAL President. “We’re especially proud of the achievements demonstrated by the scholarship recipients during the course of the program and look forward to the contributions of the 2009 AAPF scholars. Surveys show that the program will prepare them with teaching skills necessary to understand and communicate with today’s students, and 99% of graduates report a positive or highly positive experience with the program.”
All four 2009 fellowship recipients are launching on promising academic careers:
The six and a half days of on-site classes will be conducted in phases approximately two months apart, supplemented by complementary coursework and two individual “teach-back” assignments during the intervening period. Nationally recognized experts in curriculum development, higher education administration, leadership, and pedagogy created the program and will present content, including
In 2010, the ADEA/AAL ITL program will be held at UNC, with phase I occurring
