AAP Foundation Names Velasquez-Plata Kramer Scholar

CHICAGO – November 5, 2001 – The American Academy of Periodontology Foundation recently named Diego Velásquez-Plata, D.D.S., M.S.D., as the recipient of the 2001 Dr. and Mrs. Gerald M. Kramer Scholarship for Excellence. Velásquez works in private practice in West Bloomfield, Michigan, and holds a faculty position at the University of Detroit-Mercy School of Dentistry.

The Kramer Scholarship was established to honor the outstanding contributions of Dr. Gerald Kramer and his wife, Sylvia, to the periodontal profession. Students in their third year of an accredited periodontal residency are eligible to be nominated for the $10,000 award. Nominations are made by periodontal residency program directors. Critera for selection include academic achievement, community service and personal excellence.

Velásquez is a graduate of the Pontificia Universidad Javeriana School of Dentistry, Santafé de Bogotá, Colombia. Velásquez also holds a Master's Degree in Science of Dentistry from Indiana University School of Dentistry where he also completed a three-year postdoctoral training program in Prosthodontics and Dental Materials. He went on to complete a three-year program in Periodontics at The University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio.

Velásquez is a member of the American Academy of Periodontology, the American College of Prosthodontics, the American Academy of Osseointegration, the American Dental Association, the Michigan Dental Association and the John F. Johnston Society. He has lectured nationally and internationally and has published a number of articles on prosthodontics, periodontics and dental implant topics.
