CHICAGO, June 5, 2007–The American Academy of Periodontology Foundation announced a $50,000 commitment from Dr. and Mrs. Michael K. McGuire to the Foundation’s Education Endowment Fund. The AAP Foundation Education Endowment Fund was established to support the recruitment and retention of periodontal educators. In addition, the McGuires significantly increased their level of commitment to the Foundation’s Visionary Society, a special recognition category for makers of planned gifts. Dr. and Mrs. McGuire are charter members of the Visionary Society.

“Jana and I understand how important it is to have energetic and bright periodontal educators, especially on the undergraduate clinic floor. Without them, general dentists may graduate not fully understanding the important role periodontists play in comprehensive dental treatment, and we will not have periodontal role models readily accessible to encourage the best and brightest students to enter our specialty,” says Dr. McGuire regarding he and his wife’s gift to the AAP Education Endowment Fund.

“Dr. and Mrs. McGuire have shown great leadership and devotion to periodontal education with their most generous gift to the Education Endowment Fund. This Fund will support fellowships and scholarships that help our most gifted pursue their dream of teaching,” says AAP Foundation President Paul Levi, Jr., DMD. “By substantially increasing their planned giving commitment as well, the McGuires are further strengthening our specialty.”

“We felt it was important not only to provide a cash gift that could be used today to help begin the process of increasing the presence of periodontal educators in dental schools, but we also took the opportunity to enlarge our planned gift,” explains Dr. McGuire. “We have been blessed to be part of this specialty and planned giving is a painless way to ensure the future will be as bright as the past.”

“The McGuires not only have been generous with their financial support, but have given greatly of their time and expertise to the American Academy of Periodontology and to the AAP Foundation. We are deeply indebted to Mike and Jana for their support,” adds Dr. Levi.

Dr. McGuire is a past president of the American Academy of Periodontology (AAP). In 1997, the AAP presented him with its Clinical Research Award and in 2006 his research was again recognized when he was presented with the R. Earl Robinson Regeneration Award.

Dr. McGuire maintains a full-time private practice in Houston. He has served on the AAP Foundation Board of Directors since 2003 and is currently its Vice President.

The AAP Foundation is a partner in the National Campaign for Dental Education collaborative partnership, “Dental Education: Our Legacy, Our Future.” The partnership seeks to enhance the future of dental education and includes 75 partners drawn from dental educational programs, non-profit and for-profit organizations supporting dental education.

The American Academy of Periodontology Foundation is dedicated to improving the periodontal and general health of the public by increasing public and professional awareness of periodontal diseases; stimulating and supporting clinical research and the generation of new knowledge; and enhancing educational programs and opportunities in periodontology. Periodontics is one of nine dental specialties recognized by the American Dental Association.
