AAP Foundation Awards First AAP Teaching Fellowships to Drs. Al-Sabbagh and Kim

The $50,000 AAP Teaching Fellowship is awarded to outstanding young periodontal educators who are in their first three years of teaching at a U.S. periodontal training programs.

CHICAGO—October 19, 2006—The American Academy of Periodontology (AAP) Foundation recently awarded its first American Academy of Periodontology Teaching Fellowships to Mohanad Al-Sabbagh, D.D.S., M.S., Program Director of the periodontology training program at the University of Kentucky College of Dentistry, and David Kim, D.D.S., D.M.Sc., Director of Pre-doctoral Periodontics at the Harvard School of Dental Medicine.

The $50,000 AAP Teaching Fellowship is awarded to outstanding young periodontal educators who are in their first three years of teaching at U.S. periodontal training programs. The award was created to support young periodontal educators in their pursuit of an academic career in periodontal education.

Dr. Al-Sabbagh joined the University of Kentucky, College of Dentistry, faculty in 2004 as an Assistant Professor and in 2005 became an Associate Member of the dental program’s graduate faculty. In 2006 he also became Program Director of the Graduate Periodontology program at the school’s College of Dentistry. Dr. Al-Sabbagh received his D.D.S. from Damascus University, School of Dental Medicine, and his M.S. in Oral Sciences from State University of New York at Buffalo. In 2005 he received the Ruth L. Kirschstein National Research Service Award from the University of Washington, School of Dental Medicine and in 2004 was recognized for teaching excellence by the University at Buffalo, School of Dental Medicine, Department of Periodontics.

Dr. Kim received his D.D.S. from the University of Maryland Dental School, Baltimore, and his D.M.Sc. from Harvard School of Dental Medicine, where he also received his Certificate in Periodontology. Dr. Kim was a Research Fellow in Oral Biology at Harvard School of Dental Medicine and a Fellow in Periodontology at the school. He has been a Clinical Associate in Dentistry at Massachusetts General Hospital and was on the clinical staff of Harvard University Health Services. He also became an Instructor at Harvard School of Dental Medicine in 2005 and Director of the Pre-doctoral Periodontics program the same year. In 2005 Dr. Kim was recipient of the AAP Balint Orban award in clinical science.

The AAP Teaching Fellowships were created by a $1 million commitment from the American Academy of Periodontology and are administered by the AAP Foundation. Candidates for the award are nominated by the periodontal chair of their teaching institution.

The American Academy of Periodontology Foundation is dedicated to improving the periodontal and general health of the public by increasing public and professional awareness of periodontal diseases; stimulating and supporting clinical research and the generation of new knowledge; and enhancing educational programs and opportunities in periodontology. Periodontics is one of nine dental specialties recognized by the American Dental Association.
