Step-by-step instructions for gaining access to members-only online information...
AAP Member Login Procedure
Follow the instructions below to gain access to information in the AAP Members section and Member Service Center.
Your First Login
The first time you access the Member Login page, enter your Academy member number in the USER ID box and your Academy-assigned PASSWORD. Then click the LOGIN button.
If you do not know your assigned Password, click the "Password Reminder Service" link to have it e-mailed to the address in your member record.

Changing Your Password
After your first login, go to the Member Service Center to choose a password that will be easier for you to remember. Enter the password of your choice in the form, and reenter it to confirm it. Then click the UPDATE LOGIN button.

Selecting a Password
Here are some tips for choosing a password that is both secure and easy to remember:
- Your password must have 8-20 characters. They can be uppercase, lowercase and numeric characters, but no spaces, punctuation marks or other symbols.
- A combination of uppercase and lowercase letters makes your password harder for a hacker to guess (e.g., NYCitydds) You must use the same capitalization when you log in, or your password won't be accepted.
- Numbers also help to make your password secure (e.g., gumDoc74 for the year you began practice).
- It's best NOT to choose complete words (e.g., your last name) or easily known number sequences (e.g., your phone number or birthday). Spelling variations add to your password's security (e.g., 4goodGumz).
After You Change Your Password
On the Member Login page, enter your User ID (AAP Member number) and the Password you selected.

Login Problems
There are a number of problems that may cause your login not to be accepted.

Your login will fail if you entered the wrong USER ID or PASSWORD.
- Try logging in again. A typing mistake may have caused your login problem. To verify your USER ID, (member number) check your membership card or a Journal mailing label. To be sure that characters and capitalization of your PASSWORD match what's in the database, you may want to type it in another window and then copy and paste it to the Login form.
- Use the Password Reminder Service. If you don't remember how to log in or your login is not confirmed, click the link to the Password Reminder Service. You'll be asked to enter your member number and then your password will be reset and e-mailed to the address you've given the Academy. If you don't receive the message with your password within a day, your e-mail address of record may not be correct and you should contact the AAP.

Your login will fail if "cookies" aren't enabled on your browser.
- Using Internet Explorer, version 6.0 or later, you can enable cookies for the AAP site by going to "Internet Options" on your browser's "Tools" menu. Click the "Privacy" tab and move the slider to change your setting. The "Medium" setting will block harmful cookies but accept AAP's login cookie. If you prefer the "High" or "Medium High" setting, click the "Edit" button, enter "perio.org" in the "Address of Web Site" box and click "Allow" for AAP's login cookie.
- Using Netscape, in the newest versions, you can fix this problem by opening your Netscape browser and going to the AAP Home Page. Choose "Cookie Manager" from the Tools menu. If you see the option "Unblock cookies from this site" in black, click on it. (If that option is grayed out, it means that cookies are already unblocked so you don't need to change your setting.) You may need to repeat this when you log in at the Member Service Center since that is technically a different site.
In slightly older Netscape browsers (starting in version 4.7), you can enable cookies by going to "Preferences" on your browser's "Edit" menu. Click on "Advanced" or "Privacy & Security." Under "Cookies," be sure the setting will allow AAP's server to deposit a cookie on your computer. For extra protection, you can check "Ask me before storing a cookie" and then refuse cookies at sites you don't trust.
- Using other browsers, check the Help program for instructions on enabling cookies.
Your login may fail if you access the Internet using WebTV.
Before you try to access Member resources with WebTV, you must always access the Member Login form first.
