What's New in 2008

THEME

"On the Shoulders of Giants" is the theme of this year's Annual Meeting, which honors the pioneers of periodontics as well as the cutting-edge advances in the specialty. It is derived from a quote by Sir Isaac Newton: "If I see further, it is because I stand on the shoulders of giants."

DEDICATION

The 2008 Annual Meeting is dedicated to the memory of Dr. William (Bill) Ammons (1932-2006), in recognition of his dedication to the specialty. Dr. Ammons graduated from Texas Christian University in 1955, served in the United States Air Force during the Korean War and returned to graduate from the University of Texas Dental School in 1959. Dr. Ammons continued his graduate training at the University ofWashington Dental School and graduated in 1970 with his MSD and Certificate in Periodontics. Dr. Ammons taught in the Department of Periodontics at the University of Washington and lectured internationally. He maintained a private practice and taught on a part-time basis until his passing.

WHAT'S NEW

Scan & Go

The AAP will utilize Scan & Go stations to expedite the registration process. “Scan” and “Go” describes self-registration where pre-registrants can swipe their confirmation barcode (received prior to the meeting) and print off their badge and tickets on-site. All attendees must present a valid state- or government-issued photo ID. Attendees may use their name and e-mail address in lieu of the confirmation barcode. No badge reprints will be available on-site.

Insurance Workshops - CE Credit Available!

It’s a 1-2-3 punch with all three Insurance Workshops now running Saturday, Sunday and Monday! Take away valuable information that can be readily applied back at the office, with new presenters speaking at this year’s case study presentations. Insurance Workshops at this year’s Annual Meeting are eligible for continuing education credits under the ADA CERP standards, with the AAP as the recognized provider. Credits will be offered for the workshops toward the practice management requirement.

Session Handouts Posted Online

This year AAP continues to expand its recycling efforts and “green” approach to the Annual Meeting by posting speaker handouts online for attendees to print out, rather than providing paper copies on-site at the sessions. Handouts will remain posted for 90 days after the close of the meeting.

Exhibit Orders

Exhibiting companies will have the option of selling product(s) on the Exhibit Floor. While all attendees may have the option of purchasing products from companies that chose to participate, this benefit is geared toward international attendees. International attendees are encouraged to place orders on the first day of the Exhibition (Sunday, September 7), as it may be possible to receive the product on the last day of the show (check with individual companies as policies may vary from company to company).

Research Forum Poster Competition

The Research Forum provides a platform for clinical or basic research to be presented by those in the field of periodontics. Qualifying posters will be on display at the Annual Meeting, with the authors present to answer questions. Eight poster finalists will present their research, with a cash prize awarded to the best in both clinical and basic research. In addition, one poster presenter will be awarded the new AAP Clinical Impact Award, given to the presenter whose research has the greatest potential for changing and improving periodontal health and patient care. Authors will be present Monday from 10:00 am - 12:00 noon to answer questions, with the competition beginning at 11:00 am. Winners will be announced at the General Assembly.
Our thanks to The Natural Dentist for sponsoring the Research Forum.
