GS1: IMMEDIATE VERSUS DELAYED IMPLANT
LOADING: POINT-COUNTERPOINT
8:00 - 10:00 am
Program Tracks: Associate Member, Implants
Moderator: Paul S. Rosen
Speakers: Oded Bahat, Dennis P. Tarnow
Endosseous implants have provided clinicians with highly
predictable solutions to patient problems. The paradigms
originally associated with implant placement and
subsequent restoration have evolved considerably over
the past several decades due to the expanding body of
evidence-based information that has been assembled.
What was once an “operating room” environment
procedure with wait periods of up to six months for
commencing the restorative phase is now being
accomplished in a day! The decision is no longer whether
or not to place an implant to solve the treatment
dilemma at hand, but rather how soon it should be
placed into function. Meeting the challenge of our
patients’ busy schedules is a burden often placed on
clinicians and one which must be factored into this
decision-making process. This dilemma of time-to-load
will be debated by our two speakers. This thoughtprovoking
session will touch on immediate versus delayed
loading for single and multiple implants, the maxillary
and mandibular arches and anterior and posterior
locations. When should one load an implant?
Educational Objectives:
- Identify which situations are more predictable for immediate loading.
- List what situations favor a delayed approach to loading.
- Notate the risk/benefits of immediate loading in the maxilla versus the mandible.
Our thanks to Straumann for sponsoring this General Session.

ANCHORAGE
2:00 - 4:30 pm
Program Track: Interdisciplinary Therapy
Moderator: Robert B. O’Neal
Speakers: Brody J. Hildebrand, David G. Kerns
This presentation will discuss how the practice of
orthodontics will change significantly as mini-screws or
micro-implants are introduced in the specialty training
programs. They are now being used for temporary
anchorage devices (TADs) in active orthodontic therapy.
Recent increased use of TADs relates to their success
rates and acceptance as reported in a variety of
orthodontic situations.
Educational Objectives:
- Engage in a discussion of published research and case presentation.

- Assess surgical placement.
CE3: PERIODONTISTS SAVE TEETH
2:00 - 4:30 pm
Program Track: Tissue Engineering/Regeneration
Moderator: Jeanne M. Salcetti
Speakers: Stuart J. Froum, Paul S. Rosen
The use of implants has broadened the treatment options
for dental patients who present with failing teeth. There
are, however, many instances where keeping the tooth
should not be viewed as a heroic measure, but rather the
treatment of choice.
Due to the advances in regenerative procedures that can
provide more predictable treatment outcomes, we are
better able to treat teeth with advanced osseous lesions.
By meeting our patients’ desires to maintain their natural
dentition in health, comfort and function, the periodontist
is in the unique position to be the “go-to provider” for
treatment planning and patient care. This course will
reaffirm this philosophy. Two clinicians who wholly
embrace regeneration in their practices will discuss
and demonstrate various regenerative procedures
designed to save teeth. Indications as well as stepby-
step descriptions of these procedures will allow
the participants to learn when, when not and how
to perform these techniques. Regenerative materials
will also be discussed and evaluated.
Educational Objectives:
- Review the indications and factors for regenerative success.
- Define the role that biologic agents may play in regeneration today.
- Discuss and demonstrate the techniques/materials used in the regenerative procedures to re-grow bone, soft tissue and periodontal ligament around teeth.
CE4: ENHANCING YOUR REFERRAL
RELATIONSHIPS
2:00 - 4:30 pm
Program Tracks: Associate Member, Practice
Development and Management
Moderator: Gordon L. Douglass
Speaker: David Schwab
Session Handout
Periodontists are facing a more competitive environment,
especially since general dentists are now placing implants.
The unique nature of a periodontal practice requires
specialized marketing and practice management
techniques.
This course, developed exclusively for periodontists,
provides attendees with numerous tips and techniques
for increasing referral - both from satisfied patients, as
well as professional referral sources. Specific guidance for
explaining the benefits of periodontal and implant
treatment to patients, quoting fees and achieving case
acceptance will also be covered. This presentation helps
periodontists and staff learn how to educate the public,
improve communication, incorporate new business
technologies and build the periodontal practice.
Educational Objectives:
- Take full advantage of the perio-medical interface.
- Increase the implant side of the periodontal practice.
- Leverage your marketing of immediate-load implants.
CE5: EVALUATING YOUR PATIENT’S
MEDICAL RISK
2:00 - 4:30 pm
Program Tracks: Associate Member, Periodontal
Medicine
Moderator: Richard J. Nagy
Speakers: Robert C. Fazio, John A. Yagiela
Patients requiring periodontal therapy have a much
higher prevalence of cardiopulmonary disease than the
average dental patient. This course seeks to equip the
participant to better evaluate and manage these patients
requiring periodontal/implant surgery. This session will
also discuss the changing antibiotic options in dentistry
for acute infections and prophylaxis. The 2007 American
Heart Association Guidelines for prevention of bacterial
endocarditis will be discussed and clarified. Answers will
be presented on common questions such as: What is the
definitive statement regarding patients who forgot to take
their antibiotic?
Educational Objectives:
- Determine when a cardiac patient requires medical evaluation before invasive periodontal therapy.
- Describe the relationships between obesity and cardiopulmonary disease, and how chair position may influence patient outcome.
- Modify dental drug use to minimize the potential for adverse interactions with medications prescribed to treat cardiopulmonary disease.
CE6: SOFT TISSUE MANAGEMENT OF THE
EDENTULOUS SITE
2:00 - 4:30 pm
Program Track: Periodontal Plastic Surgery/Oral
Reconstructive Surgery
Moderator: Preston D. Miller, Jr.
Speakers: Edward P. Allen, Stig K. Osterberg
This presentation will focus on both the use of allograft
material to correct mild to moderate alveolar deep ridge
defects using a minimally invasive surgical technique, and
the use of palatal pedicle grafts to treat two-surface
recessions on teeth adjacent to edentulous sites.
Educational Objectives:
- Learn a minimally invasive surgical technique for soft tissue ridge augmentation.
- Understand the importance of a well-designed prosthesis in developing and maintaining soft tissue form.
- Gain knowledge of a surgical technique for treating two-surface recessions on teeth adjacent to an edentulous site.
CE7: CONTROVERSIES WITH LOCAL
DELIVERY AGENTS
2:00 - 4:30 pm
Program Tracks: Associate Member, Therapies to
Obtain/Maintain a Healthy Periodontium
Moderator: Michael S. Reddy
Speakers: Donald S. Clem III, Connie L. Drisko,
Maria E. Ryan
The direct access to the periodontal structures has
prompted research and development of delivery systems
for treatment of infection, inflammation and regenerative
repair of destroyed tissue. This program presents the
evidence for local delivery agents in surgical and nonsurgical
management of periodontitis. The clinical role
and indications for locally-delivered agents in periodontal
practice will be discussed. The relationship between
industry, science, the specialty and academics will also be
explored as we plan to move forward with new advances.
Educational Objectives:
- Interpret the scientific evidence for local delivery of chemotherapeutic and regenerative medicine applications in periodontology.
- Formulate a best practice approach for incorporating local delivery agents in periodontal procedures.
