Insurance Workshop 1: Reporting Periodontal
Procedures to Third Parties
Saturday, September 6, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
This is the Academy's traditional Insurance Workshop, which is recommended for a new staff person, office manager, or any other individual who works in a
periodontal practice and needs a baseline understanding of insurance claim submissions and American Dental Association (ADA) Current Dental
Terminology (CDT) 2007 procedure codes related to periodontal treatment. Registration is on a first-come, first-served basis and is limited to 75
attendees. After completing this workshop, attendees will
be able to:
- Differentiate between types of dental insurance, which will improve understanding of and communication about patient dental insurance plans
- Properly apply ADA CDT-2007 codes for more accurate coding submissions
- Communicate with third parties about coding issues
- Begin to submit electronic claims
- Understand the basic structure of American Medical Association codes and recognize appropriate indications for submitting to medical insurance
Insurance Workshop 2: Case Study Claims Presentation
Sunday, September 7, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.
This workshop is designed for those who have a solid understanding of the insurance claims submission process and CDT-2007 codes. The session
will consist of a panel discussion of dental claim case
studies. In commenting on the case studies, the panel of hree dental consultants for insurance carriers will review different aspects of claims submissions, denial of claims, and payment of claims. The panel members will provide their insight
from 9 a.m. to noon, followed by lunch and a
question-and-answer session with the AAP’s insurance
consultant and clinical affairs manager from 1 to 3
p.m. The question-and-answer session will provide
attendees with an opportunity to ask specific questions
related to insurance coding, reimbursement, and submission
of claims. Registration is limited to 100 attendees. After completing this workshop, attendees will
be able to:
- Understand explanation of benefits (EOBs)
- Distinguish how benefit carriers determine reimbursement for procedures
- Learn what procedure codes need documentation and attachments
- Determine why certain claims are denied
- Identify what combination of procedure codes are usually submitted to insurance and how they are reimbursed by different carriers (e.g., D4260, osseous surgery; D4263, bone replacement graft; and D4266, guided tissue regeneration)
- Learn about AAP resources available to assist with third party issues, such as AAP News articles, frequently asked questions, and Current Procedural Terminology for Periodontics 11th Edition (CPT 11)
Insurance Workshop 3: Electronic Claims Submission and Overview of Third Party Issues
Monday, September 8, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.
An expert on electronic data interchange and a former employee of a major dental insurance carrier, Alan Feldman will present a seminar on electronic transactions from 9 a.m. to noon. Following lunch, from 1 to 4 p.m., the session will feature a comprehensive overview led by Academy staff on insurance and third party issues. Included will be updated information
about CDT-2007 codes related to periodontics, adjudication
of claims, as well as a summary of how to file medical insurance. Registration will be limited to 75 attendees. Following this presentation, attendees will have a better understanding of:
- EDI and how it is used in dentistry
- Practice management software systems and their functions
- How to file claims with electronic attachments: live demonstration
- The National Provider Identifier number (NPI)
- Insurance carriers’ Web sites – What some major carriers have to offer:
